Topsoil vs Garden Soil vs Compost
How topsoil, garden soil, and compost differ, and how to blend them for lawns, beds, and raised planters.
Topsoil is general fill and grading material. Garden soil is topsoil blended with organic matter for planting. Compost is decomposed organic matter used to amend soil, not fill volume.
The differences
- Topsoil: bulk fill, minimal amendment, cheapest per yard
- Garden soil: blended for planting, midrange price
- Compost: amendment only, most expensive per yard, adds nutrients and structure
Blending for a raised bed
A common mix: 50 percent screened topsoil, 30 percent compost, 20 percent coarse sand or pine bark. Fill first with topsoil, then top with the blend for the top 6 to 8 inches.
