Topsoil Depth Guide
Recommended topsoil depths for lawns, raised beds, grading, and shrub planting, with the reasoning for each.
Recommended depths: 4 to 6 inches for a new lawn, 8 to 12 inches for shrub beds, 12 to 18 inches for vegetable raised beds, and 1/4 to 1/2 inch for lawn top-dressing.
Why depth matters
Roots follow available structure and nutrients. Too shallow and the lawn or plants dry out and starve. Too deep and you spend money on soil the roots will never use.

- Lawn top-dressing: 1/4 to 1/2 inch
- New lawn: 4 to 6 inches
- Shrub beds: 8 to 12 inches
- Vegetable raised beds: 12 to 18 inches
