How Much Does Topsoil Weigh?

Weight of screened topsoil per cubic yard, per bag, and how moisture changes hauling and shipping calculations.

A cubic yard of screened topsoil weighs about 1,800 to 2,200 lb dry, and up to 2,800 lb wet. A common 40 lb bag holds about 0.75 cubic feet.

Weight per yard

Screened topsoil averages roughly 1 ton per cubic yard dry. Wet weight can push a full pickup bed load over payload capacity, so err on the side of smaller loads.

Hauling considerations

A 1/2 ton pickup can safely carry about 1/2 cubic yard of wet topsoil, a 3/4 ton about 3/4 cubic yard, and a 1 ton up to a full cubic yard. Anything larger is a delivery.
