How Much Topsoil Do I Need?
How to size a topsoil order for a lawn top-dressing, raised bed, or grade repair using cubic yards.
A 1,000 sq ft lawn top-dressed with 1 inch of soil takes about 3 cubic yards. A 4 x 8 raised bed filled 12 inches deep is about 1.2 cubic yards. Multiply area x depth in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27.
Lawn top-dressing
Aim for 1/4 to 1/2 inch per pass. Anything thicker smothers grass. Over 1,000 sq ft, that is roughly 0.75 to 1.5 cubic yards.
Raised beds
Fill to at least 8 inches for annuals and 12 to 18 inches for deep-rooted vegetables. A 4 x 8 x 12 inch bed = 32 cubic feet = 1.2 cubic yards.
