What drives tree removal complexity

Size matters, but it is not the only factor. A 70 foot pine in an open pasture is a much simpler job than a 40 foot oak leaning over a garage roof and a power drop. Height and trunk diameter set the volume of wood to bring down. Condition tells you how predictable the tree is: dead limbs snap, healthy ones bend. Lean and proximity dictate whether the crew can drop the whole tree or has to piece it out limb by limb. This planner rolls those inputs into a single score you can use to sanity-check bids.

What the score does not tell you

It does not tell you whether a specific tree is safe. Only a qualified arborist inspecting the tree can make that call, and this planner is not a substitute for one. Its job is to help you understand roughly how big a project this is before you start collecting quotes.

Working near utility lines

Any tree contacting or overhanging energized utility lines is a utility problem, not a homeowner problem. Call the electric utility first. Their crews (or their approved line-clearance contractors) do the work at no charge in most areas. A general tree service should never touch a tree in contact with energized lines.
