How to size a tree for a removal quote

Tree removal quotes are driven mostly by two things: how big the tree is and how tricky its location is. This calculator handles the size side. Two simple measurements (height and trunk circumference) are enough to place a tree into the size and debris classes contractors use every day.

The two measurements

Height is the distance from the ground to the top of the tree. A tape measure will not reach, so most people estimate by comparing to a nearby known height (a two story house is roughly 20 to 25 feet at the eave) or use a phone app. The second measurement is trunk circumference, measured with a flexible tape wrapped around the trunk at about 4.5 feet off the ground.

Circumference to diameter (DBH)

Arborists talk about trunk diameter, not circumference. To convert, divide the circumference by pi (3.14159). A trunk that measures 63 inches around comes out to about 20 inches in diameter. This diameter, measured at breast height, is called DBH and is the standard classification measurement.

Size classes

A common breakdown is: small trees under 10 inch DBH, medium 10 to 18 inches, large 18 to 30 inches, and very large above 30 inches. A small ornamental can often be dropped in one piece and cleaned up in an hour. A very large hardwood may take an entire day with a crew and multiple truck loads out.

Debris load

Debris scales with trunk diameter faster than most people expect. Doubling the diameter roughly quadruples the wood volume. That is why hauling and disposal make up a bigger share of the quote as trees get larger. Debris class is a quick way to signal to yourself how much material needs to leave the yard.

Location changes everything

A 30 inch tree in the middle of an open pasture is a very different job from a 30 inch tree leaning over a house and power line. Removal near structures, over fences, or on steep slopes requires climbers, rigging, and careful piece by piece lowering. That labor is not captured by size alone and is why quotes for similar sized trees can vary widely.
