River Rock Size Guide
How to pick the right river rock size for pathways, ground cover, dry creek beds, and decorative features.
Common sizes: 3/8 to 3/4 inch for accents and container tops, 1 to 2 inch for general ground cover and paths, 2 to 5 inch for dry creek beds, and 5 inch and up for feature stones.
Small (3/8 to 3/4 inch)
Smooth and easy to walk on. Good for filling around planters or in narrow decorative bands. Migrates easily under traffic.
Medium (1 to 2 inch)
The most common landscape river rock size. Good ground cover, stays put under light foot traffic, and hides fabric with 3 to 4 inches of depth.
Large (2 to 5 inch)
Dry creek beds, drainage swales, and border features. Fewer stones per cubic yard but higher visual impact.
