How Many Cubic Yards Do I Need?

Convert any length, width, and depth measurement to cubic yards using a simple formula, then adjust for waste and round for bulk ordering.

Cubic yards = (length ft x width ft x depth in) / 324. That single formula covers driveways, patios, garden beds, and drainage trenches. Round up to the nearest half yard for a bulk delivery.

The one formula that works everywhere

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Because depth is usually measured in inches, the working formula is (length x width x depth in inches) / 324. That divisor bakes in the inch-to-foot conversion and the divide-by-27 for cubic yards.

Worked example

A 30 x 20 ft patio at 4 inches deep: 30 x 20 x 4 = 2,400. Divide by 324 = 7.4 cubic yards. Add 10 percent waste = 8.1 cubic yards. Order 8.5 cubic yards.
