Gravel Size Guide: 3/8, 3/4, and 1 1/2 Inch
Which gravel size works best for driveways, paths, drainage, and decorative beds, and how sizes affect coverage and compaction.
Choose 3/8 inch pea gravel for paths and playgrounds, 3/4 inch crushed for driveways and general fill, and 1 to 1 1/2 inch for drainage and dry wells. Larger stone drains better but compacts less; smaller stone packs tighter but can migrate under load.
3/8 inch and smaller
Pea gravel and #8 crushed. Smooth surface, easy to walk on, good for paths and play areas. Migrates under vehicle traffic, so not a driveway material on its own.
3/4 inch (crushed)
The workhorse. Angular pieces lock together for driveways and parking pads. Also the standard for a compacted base under pavers or concrete.
1 to 1 1/2 inch (drainage stone)
Washed and clean, so water flows through without silting up. Standard for french drains, dry wells, and the bottom lift of a driveway subgrade.
