Assumptions
Water softeners work by cycling hard-water minerals through resin beads and rinsing them off with brine. The salt you buy makes that brine. Salt usage is set by three things: how much water you use, how hard that water is, and how efficient the softener is. Multiply gallons per day by grains per gallon of hardness to get daily grains of load, then divide effective softener capacity by that daily load to get days between regenerations. Salt per regeneration times regenerations per month gives you pounds of salt per month.
A softener will pull iron out of water, but at a heavy cost: each 1 ppm of iron behaves like about 4 gpg of extra hardness. If your test kit shows more than a fraction of a ppm of iron, either raise the salt dose (higher cost) or add a dedicated iron filter upstream of the softener (usually cheaper over time).
Bigger tanks regenerate less often. Higher efficiency settings use less salt per grain of hardness removed but drop effective capacity. Fixing running toilets and leaky fixtures cuts household water use, which cuts salt use directly. If your softener regenerates every two or three days, it is undersized or misconfigured, and salt bags will drain your wallet.
