Assumptions
A septic drain field (also called a leach field or absorption field) has to be large enough to accept the household wastewater flow and let it percolate safely through the soil. Two numbers drive the size: the daily design flow, based on the number of bedrooms, and the soil loading rate, based on a perc test. This calculator combines them into a required absorption area and translates that into a trench length at whatever trench width you plan to use.
Most jurisdictions require you to set aside space equal to the primary field as a reserve. If the original field fails, the replacement drops onto the reserve area with no additional land clearing. Skipping the reserve rules out re-permitting later, so include it in your planning square footage even if you never expect to need it.
This tool does not replace a licensed septic design. Actual absorption area depends on the soil profile at the exact installation depth, groundwater elevation, setbacks from wells and property lines, and the specific technology (conventional trenches, chambers, drip, mound). Get a soil evaluation and a permitted design from a qualified professional before ordering equipment or excavating.
