How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Step-by-step method to size a mulch order in cubic yards and 2 cubic foot bags for beds, borders, and tree rings.

A 100 sq ft bed at 3 inches of mulch takes about 0.9 cubic yards, which is roughly 13 bags of standard 2 cubic foot mulch. Multiply your area by depth in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.

The two-step method

First: cubic feet = area x depth in feet. Second: cubic yards = cubic feet / 27. For bags: bags = cubic feet / 2.

Worked example

A 250 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep: 250 x 0.25 = 62.5 cu ft. That is 2.3 cubic yards, or about 32 bags. Above 1.5 to 2 yards, bulk delivery is almost always cheaper.
