What removing popcorn actually involves

The classic textured ceiling was sprayed on with a hopper gun to hide seams and imperfections. Removing it means misting the surface with water until the texture softens, then scraping it back to the bare drywall, and usually applying a thin skim coat of joint compound so the ceiling reads as smooth once it is painted. The math is dominated by area, ceiling height, and whether you skim coat.

Asbestos first, always

Any home built before the early 1980s can have asbestos fibers in the popcorn texture. Sanding or scraping releases those fibers into the air. Get an inexpensive lab test on a small sample before any work; if it is positive, the job is regulated abatement and belongs to a licensed contractor.

Where the time goes

Most of a day on this project is masking (plastic on floors and walls, poly over doorways), and the second most is skim coating and sanding. The scrape itself, once the ceiling is properly wetted, moves fast. Budget more time if the previous owner painted over the texture; painted popcorn resists water and often needs mechanical removal.
