Assumptions

  • Pea gravel density: about 96 lb per cubic foot (roughly 1.3 tons per cubic yard).
  • 50 lb bag: about 0.5 cubic feet of coverage.
  • Order quantity rounded up to the nearest half cubic yard.

Sizing a pea gravel project

Pea gravel spreads a little farther per cubic yard than crushed stone because the round pieces do not lock together as tightly. For a 100 sq ft patio at 2 inches deep, plan on about 0.6 cubic yards or roughly 32 bags of 50 lb pea gravel.

Playground depth

Under playground equipment the recommended fall-attenuation depth is 9 to 12 inches of loose-fill pea gravel over a level, well-drained subgrade with containment edging.
