Click-lock planks need a flat subfloor within 3/16 inch over 10 ft; check before install.

Assumptions

  • Waste factor covers cutting, acclimation, and pattern loss.
  • Box coverage should be pulled from the actual product label.
  • Roll coverage defaults to 100 sq ft per underlayment roll.
  • Vapor barrier is a separate product on concrete substrates.

How to order flooring correctly

Flooring is sold by the box, not the square foot, and every box only covers its labeled area. Take the exact room area, add a waste percentage that matches your install pattern, then divide by the box coverage and round up to the next full box. Even a small remainder means you need to open another box.

Underlayment and vapor barrier

Most laminate and floating floor products need underlayment for sound and cushion. On slab-on-grade concrete you also need a vapor barrier under the underlayment, or a product that includes it, or the flooring can cup from ground moisture. Vinyl plank often has attached pad; do not stack pads.

Save one box

Once installed, keep at least one full unopened box in a closet. Manufacturers change dye lots and even discontinue lines within a few years, and matching a repair section later is often impossible. That extra box is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
