The two measurements that matter
Every quote starts with height and trunk circumference. Height gives the crew a sense of rigging and drop zones, and circumference converts directly into diameter, the number arborists actually price by.
Converting circumference to diameter
Wrap a tape around the trunk at about 4.5 feet up from the ground and read the circumference in inches. Divide by pi (about 3.14) to get DBH, diameter at breast height.
Size classes
Small trees are under 10 inches DBH, medium are 10 to 18, large are 18 to 30, and very large are over 30. Cost and debris load rise sharply across each class.
Worked example
A trunk measuring 63 inches around divides by pi to about 20 inches DBH. That puts the tree in the Large class, with a proportionally heavy debris load.
Why debris load scales faster than diameter
A tree's mass grows with the square of its diameter, so a 20 inch DBH tree has roughly four times the wood volume of a 10 inch tree, not two times. That is why hauling and disposal drive quotes as much as the cut itself.
Location matters too
Proximity to houses, fences, and power lines usually decides the final price. A medium tree in a tight backyard can cost more than a large tree in an open field.

How do I measure a tree I cannot reach the top of?
Use a clinometer app on your phone, or stand back until you can sight the top over an object of known height. Tree height is less critical than DBH for a rough quote.
